Note: BNC Policy Regarding Letters:
BNC invites letters from eNEWS readers. Letters and photos should be sent to
newsletter@berkeleyneighborhoodscouncil.com and should be about issues of neighborhood interest. Letters should be no longer than 500 words, although at times we will publish letters that exceed that length. All letters should state the name(s) of the author and at least the general area where the author lives or the neighborhood group he/she is affiliated with. That information will be published with the letter. Letters should also include a phone number and e-mail address where the author can be contacted. That information will NOT be published. We ask for it just in case we have any questions, and, of course, we need to verify who it was that sent the letter.
This post has two letters that we urge all of our readers to consider:
Help Solve the Literacy Gap in Berkeley
Are you 50+ and wanting to help the next generation of children in Berkeley succeed?
We need your experience! Experience Corps, an award-winning tutoring and mentoring program, is currently seeking volunteers ages 50 and older to share their life experience to support students in literacy in grades K-3. Volunteers are asked to commit for the rest of the school year for a minimum of 4 hr/wk. The unique experience and talent of older adults is the foundation of Experience Corps, so no prior tutoring experience is necessary, and training is provided.
We are currently recruiting new members to make a difference in the lives of Berkeley youth at Emerson, Rosa Parks and Washington Elementary!
If you are interested in this fun and rewarding volunteer opportunity, email Alexis Hawkins, Recruitment/Intake Coordinator at ecba.today@gmail.com or visit www.experiencecorpsbayarea.org.
Hope you’re doing well! This is Ben Hamlin, the co-founder of Localwise (www.localwisejobs.com).
I’m reaching out to local community leaders to let you know about Localwise a new community job board in Berkeley/Oakland.
We started two months ago and have already helped over 100 people find part-time work at local businesses, non-profits, and households. We source applicants from community members as well as college students in the East Bay. As recent graduates of UC-Berkeley, ~30% of our applicants are UC-Berkeley students. Employers range from local startups, to restaurants, to families, to artists. You won’t see large national chains on our platform because we believe that strengthening local businesses is key to strengthening local communities.
Given your leadership in the community, I’m hoping you could help spread the word. In particular, it would be wonderful to be featured on your website, newsletter, or any other place you find appropriate. I’m not sure about the credentials for inclusion, but Localwise was created by two Berkeley students and operates out of SkyDeck, a UC-Berkeley affiliated co-working space in Downtown Berkeley.
I’d be happy to share more about the vision behind the platform at your convenience. Thank you for your consideration.
All the best,
Ben Hamlin,
Localwise co-founder
